West Brom's Steven Reid today revealed how Roy Hodgson's ruthless edge is bringing out the best in the Baggies players.
Reid believes Hodgson's willingness to wield the axe regardless of reputation is keeping the squad on their toes.
The Baggies boss has already dropped player-of-the-season Youssouf Mulumbu, skipper Chris Brunt, Scotland international James Morrison and former England man Nicky
Shorey this season as well as leaving star striker Peter Odemwingie on the substitutes' bench.
And Reid reckons Morrison's impressive form in recent weeks proves the value of Hodgson's approach.
"Mozza has kicked on and in the last few weeks he has been superb," said Reid.
"I just think he has taken on board what the gaffer has been telling him in training.
"And it's the case now that if you're not playing well for a couple of games he's got no fear about leaving anyone out.
"You know when you're in the team you've got to play well or you'll be left out."
Odemwingie's injury problems and lack of form have coincided with Shane Long's explosion onto the Premier League scene since his summer move from Reading.
And Reid has been thrilled for his fellow Ireland international, who bagged his fifth goal in 12 Albion appearances in Saturday's 1-1 draw at QPR.
"He has been superb," said Reid.
"But I don't think he'll get carried away. He hasn't got that in his make-up."
