Walsall boss Jon Whitney will hold meetings with his players today and tomorrow as he looks to build his squad for next season.

Despite finishing in the relative comfort of mid-table, the Saddlers endured a difficult end to the campaign that saw them win just one of their last 10 matches.

And Whitney revealed that run has lead to him contemplating making more changes this summer than he originally planned.

"Possibly the turnaround might be bigger than I thought," the boss said.

"I just need to have some conversations, honest conversations with certain players.

"I'm looking forward to that, it's part of the job.

"I'm meeting the out-of-contract players Tuesday and all the players that are contracted that I want, I will meet on Wednesday.

"After that my decisions will be made and players will have time to think about what I've said to them.

"Things will materialise over the next couple of weeks.

"I've spoken to a couple of players as well myself over the last week and I'm going to look at players again next week.

"I'm up in Scotland next weekend, looking at a couple of players. The work doesn't stop.

"I've got to sit down, speak to my staff, speak to my chairman, speak to Stefan Gamble (chief executive) and Dan Mole (club secretary) and just see where we are going to go moving forward."

Meanwhile, Whitney admitted he was pleased to see Jason McCarthy win Walsall's Fans' Player of the Year - with the Southampton loanee having played every minute for the Saddlers this season.

"It's a very rare thing, to play every minute," the boss added.

"I'm proud of Jase and it's a great accolade to have, to have played every minute.

"I can't remember if anyone has ever done it here, I've never known it. It's a credit to Jase – that's what fans want: effort and playing for the shirt.

"He has done really well. His attitude and application is spot on. He will run through a brick wall for you."
