Walsall transfer news: Jon Whitney tracking Woking striker Gozie Ugwu
Walsall boss Jon Whitney has confirmed Woking striker Gozie Ugwu is a player he will scout in the coming weeks.
Reports had circulated that the Saddlers were interested in the forward who has scored 19 goals for the Vanarama National side this season.
Walsall were said to be monitoring the 23-year-old along with a host of clubs in England as well as Motherwell and Partick Thistle in Scotland.
And when asked if he was interested in Ugwu, Whitney admitted he is a player under consideration.
"He is a name on my desk," the boss said.
"There are a couple from Scotland that have been put on my desk as well.
"I have got to try and get two or three days in the week where I can watch them.
"A lot has been said, we haven't got a lot of scouts or a recruitment officer because my budget doesn't allow it.
"I have got to find ways around that but I will do everything I can to try and make this club better."
The Saddlers host Swindon at the Banks's Stadium today with Whitney eager for his side to get back to winning ways after six games without a victory.
But the boss admits his side must defend better after they let leads slip to draw with both Shrewsbury and Oxford in their previous outings.
"We are unbeaten in two and we have to try to stay unbeaten until the end of the season," Whitney continued.
"We are three points off Peterborough and we are looking at 11th place which is still within reach and it is something we have to drive for.
"And I will see who the players are who really want to go that extra bit and not allow the season to just drift away. I want to see a reaction from my players."
Whitney has also told goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray to seize his chance after Neil Etherdige was ruled out for the season with a hamstring strain.
"Neil's injury is normally two to three weeks but that is all that is left now," Whitney added.
"It's an opportunity for Craig. I thought he did well at Shrewsbury. Its up to Craig now to impress me over the coming games."
