Walsall spirit firing up young striker Amadou Bakayoko

Amadou Bakayoko believes Walsall will have a strong second half of the season because of their team spirit.

The Saddlers currently find themselves rooted in mid-table following a mixed campaign which sees them sat nine points outside the play-offs and 11 clear of the relegation zone.

But Jon Whitney's side put in their best performance of the season last weekend as they ruthlessly swept aside League One leaders Sheffield United.

And Bakayoko believes the togetherness in the group means that display is a sign of things to come.

"We are a group that really tries to encourage one another," said the 21-year-old striker.

"It's great to be a part of because the atmosphere in the camp is really good.

"That's important because the more everyone is together, the easier it is to click on the pitch.

"We know it's been an up-and-down season. But we have felt for while the team is really close to clicking.

"We have worked on a lot of different things. Now we have to keep going because we have found our feet.

"We are determined to get better and entertain the fans more because they deserve it."

As well as grabbing two assists, Bakayoko netted his ninth goal of the season in the 4-1 victory over the Blades to continue what has been an impressive breakthrough year.

And the striker feels he has come a long way since the start of the season.

"Things have been going well for me but I have to keep going," he continued.

"God willing, the goals will continue to come. But it's about hard work first and foremost.

"I can see a big difference in myself now to where I was at the start of the season. I have learnt a lot.

"I felt people hadn't seen enough of me but now I'm starting to show what I can do."

Meanwhile, Florent Cuvelier is targeting goals after putting his injury problems behind him to start Walsall's last six games.

The Belgian has endured an injury blighted few years but is now rediscovering his best form.

"There is definitely more still to come," he said.

"I want to improve every week and I want to start scoring goals.

"The target is to play every game from now until the end of the season."
