The left-back, who is the brother of Albion star James McClean, is a free agent after leaving Irish side Derry City.

McClean joined the Saddlers on trial last month - a spell which was extended to allow him to play in a the reserve game against Burton Albion.

And now Whitney has confirmed the 19-year-old will continue to train with the club until January as he seeks to win a permanent deal.

"Patrick is on trial still," the boss confirmed.

"I haven't offered him anything at the moment, I have said he is welcome to stay and train with us.

"I'm not in a position to offer him anything at the moment but he is such a great kid and the lads have really taken to him.

"If things develop over the next two or three weeks then so be it. At the moment I am not offering him anything but he is still here training with us.

"I wanted to keep him with the group because I really like him as a kid. But I need to look at him a bit longer."

McClean previously saw a move to Championship side Bristol City collapse.

And now the defender is determined to try and win himself a permanent contract with Walsall.

"I was in for three days for Walsall to have a look at me and I came in, worked hard and showed I was good enough to be there," he said. "He (Whitney) asked me to stay on for another few weeks and he's giving me a chance. It's down to me now.

"I'm training every day with the first team and have had a game with the reserves and I'm absolutely loving it.

"The facilities are great and there's a gym where I can go in and do a bit extra.

"It's a great platform for me and I've been given a massive opportunity."
