Jon Whitney pushing Walsall on in hope of playoff adventure
Walsall boss Jon Whitney admits he is pleased with the progress his team has made so far this season.
The Saddlers enjoyed an unbeaten month throughout October – winning four and drawing two of their six matches in all competitions.
Next up is the visit of National League outfit Macclesfield in the FA Cup on Saturday before a trip to Leicester in the Checkatrade Trophy.
And Whitney feels his side has made big strides forward following the opening day victory over AFC Wimbledon.
"I'm happy with where we are at and I'm looking forward to pushing on," the boss said.
"In League One we are 12th, just three points off the play-offs with a game in hand.
"I'm pleased with the progress we have made. The players have shown a great work ethic and a really taking on board what we are telling them.
"There a several components to a successful team. But the fact we have had more time now to work together as a group is a big help.
"All the players now understand what is expected of them. We are in a good place and ready to push on."
Whitney believes being consistent with his selection has played a major role in the Saddlers good form.
But the boss also feels his young squad is now learning how to cope in the face of adversity.
"It's always easier for me and my staff if we can work with the same team," Whitney continued.
"People talk about rotating players but the fitness of my lads means they can handle Saturday/Tuesday.
"We've been on a really good run recently, we're unbeaten in six and lost just once in the last 10.
"The important thing for me though is how cope with adversity and how we cope when things don't go to plan."
