Argentine winger Ledesma was a big hit amongst supporters during two short-term spells with the Saddlers back in 2011 and 2012.

With Whitney now targeting offensive players, many fans had hoped the 28-year-old could be set for a third stint at the Banks's Stadium.

But while Whitney has expressed an interest - he believes the former Middlesbrough man has move lucrative offers on the continent.

"I have spoken to Emmanuel's agent," the boss said.

"I was interested in speaking to him because I really like Emmy and I have kept in touch with him over the last few years.

"But I haven't heard anything for a few weeks. He has got a lot offers in many different countries."

Another player fans have been keen to see return is Leicester midfielder Michael Cain.

But Whitney confirmed the 21-year-old is not a player he has targeted this summer.

The boss however is still interested in Hiwula - who has enjoyed loan spells with the Saddlers in each of the last two seasons.

"Jordy I would love to get back in," Whitney added.

"He might be beyond our remit. But I have expressed my interest and called Jordy two or three times. It has been very open and honest.

"I like him as a kid. I think that me and my coaching staff can develop him as a player and I think we can take him to another level.

"Whether that is realistic or viable is up to them but I see Jordy as part of Walsall Football Club."

Meanwhile, Jordan Cook has paid tribute to Walsall's supporters after it was confirmed he has left the club.

He said: "I just want to thank all of the fans for the constant support even through tough periods, also all the players and all the staff for everything over these past two great seasons.

"Made some great friends along the way and I wish the club nothing but success in the future which it truly deserver."
