The creative trickster, who will be part of the Saddlers team taking on Southend today, has been nominated for the prestigious award alongside Gillingham's Bradley Dack and Swindon striker Nicky Ajose.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony tomorrow night.

"I was delighted and not surprised to see Rom nominated." Whitney said.

"When I voted I wasn't allowed to pick him but if I could I would have had him first, second and third. Whether he wins or not, it is great to get accolades like that.

"He deserves it because he does it for the team. I'm sure he will tell you his team-mates have set him up for this award. "It's his individual ability that is being recognised. But we enable him to have that role.

"For me all the players are equally important but if he does go on and win it he will take it for the team.

"It's a team effort. Hopefully Rom will win and he will accept it for everyone from Tom the kitman to Mandy the chef and all the administration staff. We accept any awards here as a group because that is our philosophy."

Milan Lalkovic has also backed his team mate and close pal to win the award.

"The nomination is well deserved," the winger said.

"We both signed for the club at a similar time and I remember Dean Smith talking about consistency with us.

"In my first spell we often would score in the same games.

"People have always talked about potential and consistency with us but I feel we are getting there.

"Romaine is so creative and he works hard for the team.

"I enjoy playing with him because he is clever and great to link up with.

"He has provided me with a few assists this season and hopefully he will provide me with a few more."
