Adam Chambers eyes on automatic promotion

The last-gasp defeat to Wigan last weekend has left the Saddlers in fourth place, six points shy of the tomorrow's opponents Burton and Chambers knows that they need to improve a run of just two wins in their last eight matches to realise their Championship ambitions.

"Given the situation we have been in all season, automatic promotion must be the aim," said the 35-year-old.

"We shouldn't be thinking about the play-offs at this point.

"We need to get some wins under our belt and get back into the top two because that's where we want to be at the end of the season."

The Saddlers have occupied one of the automatic positions for the majority of the campaign thus far, and while Chambers believes their performances up to now should have yielded more reward, he understands that the past counts for nothing entering the final run-in.

"In our position, we feel confident that we are the best side in the league. On our day we are a match for anyone and given the way we've played up to this point I think we deserve to be in the top two.

"But that doesn't mean anything now; it's about what we do from this point until the end of the season."

Walsall fended off interest in their prize assets during the January transfer window, with the likes of Rico Henry, Romaine Sawyers and Tom Bradshaw all linked with lucrative moves away.

Chambers, who is playing his 10th consecutive season in the third tier of English football, recognises the level of talent within the club's ranks.

He said: "The potential of the team and the players in the squad is unbelievable.

"We have a lot of talent and I'm sure that there will be plenty of them that go on and are playing in the Championship, if not higher – hopefully with Walsall next season.

"They've got a bright future ahead of them."
