John Ward rules himself out of Walsall job
Caretaker boss John Ward has ruled himself out of the running to be the next Walsall manager.
The 64-year-old has been placed in temporary charge of the Saddlers along with coaches Jon Whitney and Neil Cutler following the departure of Dean Smith.
But while many bookmakers have him as the favourite to take over the reins full-time, Ward is happy in his role as professional development coach.
"I enjoyed it at Shrewsbury but I'm not certain I want to be on the front line anymore," he said.
"I have got two younger guys here to work with who want to push on and take advice and I am quite happy to do that.
"I don't see myself going back into management whether that's here or elsewhere.
"I'm at an age and stage where I'm happy to be an advisor, helper, coach and be on the training ground.
"I love being on the training ground with the players, helping them prepare for games.
"I'd rather just leave the problems to somebody else, if I'm being honest.
"I'm quite happy for someone else to take the responsibility and I'll advise and help as much as I can if they want that help."
