Two signings still on Dean Smith's agenda

Walsall boss Dean Smith wants two new signings before next week's transfer deadline despite his side's flying start to the season.

The Saddlers have claimed seven points from their opening three League One fixtures and beaten Championship side Nottingham Forest in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

But Smith is refusing to rest on his laurels and is looking to add two more players to his ranks before the end of the transfer window next Tuesday.

He said: "I have got a couple of players in training with us at the moment so we are having a good look at them.

"We need to make sure we strengthen. It only takes one tackle for a player to get injured and they are out.

"You need to be on the ball and make sure you have a strong enough squad. With the amount of games we are playing, Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday, it is a tough ask for a group of players and that is why the squad will get used and we need to strengthen.

"It (the transfer market) is moving but very slowly, as always."

Smith, who saw his side win a second successive away game with Tuesday's 2-1 victory at Rochdale, could opt to strengthen when the loan window reopens, but he favours permanent signings.

He is believed to be targeting defenders and midfielders, although he admits he is already happier with this season's squad than last season's.

"I keep looking over my shoulder and I have people who I know can go on and do a job," he said. "No disrespect to anybody but last season it wasn't quite the level we are at this moment.

"We are sharing goals out as well which we didn't do last season. That is a really good thing and you have to have building blocks in there.

"I have told everyone we have continuity at the club. People know what we are trying to do."
