Jordy Hiwula: Walsall impact is just the start

Goal hero Jordy Hiwula has promised the best is yet to come after beginning his Walsall career with a bang.

The 20-year-old took just four minutes to find the net on debut, after coming on as a substitute in Saturday's 2-0 win at Doncaster.

And Hiwula, who joined the Saddlers last week on a month-long loan from Manchester City, believes he will only get better the more he gets to know his new team-mates.

He said: "This is just the start. I didn't have my first training session at Walsall until Thursday but I will train even more with the lads this week and we have the game tomorrow too.

"It's about being around my team-mates, getting used to them and what they are doing. Hopefully I can bed in even more."

Hiwula headed home Jordan Cook's cross with 20 minutes to go at the Keepmoat Stadium to put the Saddlers two up and set them on course for their fifth win in seven away league games.

And he added: "I had two touches prior to the goal.We worked the ball well out wide and then I saw the cross coming, so I just made the run in front of the defender and it went in.

"It wasn't the easiest of finishes and I just wanted to get a good connection on the ball. It managed to go in and I'm happy with that."

Hiwula had a largely disappointing loan spell at Yeovil earlier this season when he netted just once in nine games.

And Saddlers boss Dean Smith said: "It's a great introduction for him.

"I know one of the question marks when he was on loan at Yeovil was he didn't score enough – but he has certainly shown us he can do that. He looked bright and this will be a big boost for him.

"I'm not going to forget Ashley Grimes, either, because he did a lot of work to tire people out and allow Jordy to go on and do the job he did."
