Saddlers' Chambers: Keep Cain

Skipper Adam Chambers wants Walsall to extend the loan stay of fellow central midfielder Michael Cain.

The veteran admits to being hugely impressed with the performances of Cain since the 20-year-old joined the Saddlers from Premier League Leicester City in October.

Talks over Cain's future are ongoing between the clubs and Chambers for one is keen to see him remain at the Banks's for the time being.

"It's not my decision but he is a very talented player, which everyone can see from the games he has played," said the Walsall captain.

"He is a good lad too and fitted straight into what we are doing.

"He would be a great addition to the team, to the squad, as long as he could stay here.

"It would be great to see him stay here for longer.

"It improves the quality of the squad as a whole and competition for places too. It would be great to see but obviously it is not my decision."

Cain has made 18 appearances since arriving on an initial month-long loan.

His stay has since twice been extended by a further month and is due to expire after this Saturday's game at Colchester. With the January transfer window open, the Saddlers could try and keep him until the end of the season.

But with the youngster's contract at the King Power Stadium set to expire in the summer, manager Dean Smith has stressed everything must be right before any deal is done.

Cain has filled the gap left by injured Sam Mantom alongside Chambers in the centre of the Saddlers midfield.

The skipper believes there are similarities in style between his current partner and last season's player of the season, who has not started a game this term because of a knee injury.

"There are some similarities. Sam has a similar range of passing and both have the eye for goal," he added.

"Michael likes to get his shots away from distance.

"They have their own individual skills as well which they bring to the team.

"It would be nice to see him stay for longer and I think he has enjoyed himself here."
