Dean Smith: Walsall don't need signings

Manager Dean Smith has indicated he sees no need to dip into the transfer market in January to strengthen Walsall's bid for glory on two fronts.

The Saddlers approach the second half of the season just three points off the League One play-offs despite Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Coventry.

They are also aiming for a first-ever Wembley appearance in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, with the first leg of the Northern Area final beckoning at Preston on Wednesday night.

Smith, though, is happy with his options, saying: "If we require players then we can bring them in but, at the moment, I've got almost a fully-fit squad.

"Plus I've got four young lads – Amadou Bakayoko, Jordan Murphy, Jake Heath and Liam Roberts – out on loan at the moment who are getting valuable experience, but could come back.

"Jordan Cook was missing on Saturday but he will be back soon and Sam Mantom will be back by the end of January.

"So we've already got two really good players there to come back."

Cook should recover from the stomach bug that kept him out of the Coventry loss in time for the midweek trip to Deepdale.

But Walsall have concerns over the fitness of centre-back James Chambers who came off with a toe injury in the second half on Saturday.

Smith added: "One of their lads had jumped on James's toe and it was sore so he had to come off.

"We'll have to look at him today and hopefully he'll be all right for the game on Wednesday."
