Dean Smith done with Walsall's transfers
Manager Dean Smith today declared his summer dealings done – as Walsall missed out on a Troy Deeney windfall.
The Saddlers had been hoping to net a cash boost had their former hitman left Watford, thanks to a sell-on clause in the deal which saw him move to Vicarage Road four years ago.
But Deeney, who has been the subject of bids ranging between £6.5m and £10m from Leicester City and QPR, yesterday penned a new deal with the Hornets.
In reality, the news is unlikely to trouble Smith, who claims striker Mathieu Manset will be the last man through the door at the Saddlers this summer.
The 25-year-old signed minutes after Tuesday night's 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, bringing to an end the Saddlers boss' long hunt for a striker.
And he says, barring any emergency loan moves, Manset is the last man in.
"That's it in terms of summer dealings unless I dip into the loan market later on after the window closes," said Smith.
"I have had a number of enquiries ongoing these past few weeks and that is the way it is. You are fighting in a market where other people are after players as well.
"Normally players go where the most money is being offered.
"You have to be patient. As I have always said, you go in at the end of the season and you have a target list of 10 players, you might end up with numbers nine and ten but you have got to be prepared to do that."
Smith added: "It's been a tough period with having so many players on the sidelines injured.
"But one of the good things for us is we have had the likes of young Liam Kinsella come through from it.
"He has been outstanding and shows what the club is about. But it is also pleasing now to have some competition up there."
