Dean Smith: Liam Kinsella will only get better
Walsall manager Dean Smith believes Liam Kinsella will only get better – and admits the teenager could yet end up in midfield.
Kinsella's performance at right-back was one of the biggest positives from Saturday's 0-0 draw with Bradford and the first year professional is in line to feature again tonight against Yeovil.
The 18-year-old played mainly as a central midfielder for the Saddlers reserves last season and Smith admits the youngster's versatility is another big plus to his game.
"He can play in midfield as well but he has come through the youth team as a central midfielder," said Smith.
"But he has played right-back a number of times well so he can do either position.
"He did really well in attack too and I think he got confidence from the first ten to 15 minutes as he was bouncing a few passes around.
"I was really pleased for him. He is a lovely lad to work with and he has a great work ethic and he will get better and better."
Taking the plaudits along with Kinsella was midfielder Billy Clifford, who was handed the sponsors Man of the Match award on his full debut.
The 21-year-old is beginning to look like one of the finds of the summer and Smith is pleased with the progress he has made in his opening weeks with the club.
"He was instrumental on the ball on Saturday," said Smith. "I thought he tired in the last 20 minutes and got a little bit loose at times.
"But that will come through matches. He is a very good footballer.
"We spoke at half-time we were picking up a lot of balls in front of their midfield and we would have liked to move a little bit higher up.
"He is comfortable on the ball and I think you can say that for most of the team.
"We've got a good player as well in Ashley Grimes, he has had a few chances as well as the one at the death and one from the corner.
"But he quickens the play up around the box because he is clever and has great feet and one touch play. It opens it up for other people."
