Walsall boss has another attacker in mind
Walsall manager Dean Smith was today hopeful of further bolstering his firepower as French striker Mathieu Manset emerged as the club's latest trialist.
The 24-year-old former Hereford United and Reading hitman impressed in last night's 3-2 friendly defeat to Leicester City at the Banks's Stadium, scoring one and making another for Ashley Grimes.
Smith revealed after the game he was hopeful of tying down a different attacking signing today and admitted Manset, along with fellow trialist Danny Webber, both have the chance to earn deals.
Manset, who ended last season at Royal Antwerp, was officially listed as 'trialist' on the team-sheet and Smith declined to confirm his identity after the game though he did have praise of his performance.
"He's a trialist, he is one we are having a look at," said Smith. "It is an opportunity for him. He did well, he didn't do himself any harm.
"The good thing about it is he is nowhere near the fitness levels we want at the minute but he did well.
"He is with us with the week and we will speak to him and his representatives."
On Webber, who was also listed as trialist, Smith said: "I spoke with him at the start of the week, told him what I expected and he asked for the chance to prove it.
"He will be here to the end of the week and will feature in the squad against Mansfield.
"On other signings we are close, I am hopeful of having an answer on one in the morning. It would be a permanent deal. Hopefully, we can go on from there."
