Walsall at the front in scramble to sign Febian Brandy

Walsall were today in pole position to re-sign Febian Brandy after his Sheffield United contract was cancelled.

The Blades confirmed yesterday the 25-year-old winger had been released, a year to the day after he joined the Yorkshire club.

And he could now very soon be back with Walsall on a permanent basis, with boss Dean Smith keen to complete a deal.

Several other clubs are said to be interested but sources in Yorkshire suggest Walsall are, for the moment at least, very much at the front of the queue.

Brandy spent the second half of last season back on loan with the Saddlers after falling out of favour at the Blades and Smith has monitored the former Manchester United trainee's situation through the summer.

Though the Saddlers boss was reluctant to pay a fee, that significant obstacle has been removed with Brandy becoming a free agent. He scored four goals – including a hat-trick in the 5-1 win at Notts County – during last season's loan spell.

After a successful first season at the Banks's in which he scored seven goals, having joined as a trialist in 2012, Brandy's future was subject of a saga last summer and, after turning down several offers to stay, he opted to sign a two-year deal with the Blades.
