Andy Butler in Walsall contract talks
Captain Andy Butler today said he wants to know Walsall's plans for next season before committing his future.
The influential Saddlers skipper is out of contract at the end of the current campaign but has an option to extend his deal by a further year.
Butler is hopeful of resolving his future soon and revealed he will hold further talks with manager Dean Smith before making a final decision.
"I'm talking to Dean now and hopefully we get something sorted soon," he said. "I've had a few chats with him and we will see what happens.
"I've enjoyed my time here. The last three-and-a-half years have been brilliant for me. They have made me a better player than I ever was before.
"I'm still enjoying myself. I just need to talk to the gaffer now to see what is happening."
When pressed if he was likely to stay, Butler replied: "I don't want to say I'm not staying because I do like this place. The gaffer has been good to me and I do enjoy it. It's just a few little things I have to talk to the gaffer about."
Butler, who has made more than 150 appearances since joining as a free agent in 2010, also rejected rumours his move home to live in Yorkshire last year would have any bearing on his decision.
The centre-back currently commutes to training with team-mates Richard O'Donnell, Nicky Featherstone and Craig Westcarr.
"I have heard people asking about my travelling but it has been a year now," he said
"It's been good, we have a good car pool and time travels fast. That has not been a problem, it is not an issue. I just want to speak to the gaffer now and see what the plans are for next year."
Whatever the future holds, Butler is keen for a quick resolution and wants to avoid the kind of saga which surrounded Will Grigg and Febian Brandy last summer, who both left the club after prolonged talks.
"I do want it tied up," he said. "I'm 30 so I have to start tying my future up early I think because not too many want a 30-year-old now.
"It's something I have got to try and sort out pretty quickly, just for both sides really, I don't want to mess anybody about."
