Walsall FC ruling out striker bid
Dean Smith today ruled out signing another striker as Walsall closed in on their second goalkeeper of the summer.
The Saddlers have already signed Richard O'Donnell but the boss has made adding another keeper one of his main priorities. Blackburn Rovers shot-stopper Seb Usai played on Saturday in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Nottingham Forest under-21s and is the latest of several keepers to have a trial at the Banks's.
Former Albion reserve Shane Lewis and ex-Liverpool man Tyrell Belford have all been looked at along with Calum Barrett, formerly of Villa.
Smith was set to sit down over the weekend with assistant Richard O'Kelly and goalkeeper coach Neil Cutler to make a final decision on which man to offer a deal ahead of Saturday's League One opener with Tranmere Rovers.
But one area the boss isn't looking for reinforcements is up front, where the Saddlers have seen the biggest turnover of players.
New signings Troy Hewitt and Romaine Sawyers all have limited first team experience along with Chelsea loanee Milan Lalkovic. But Smith is happy with his strikeforce and will instead switch his search to finding a wide midfield player.
"We are looking in wide areas," he said.
"I've got five players there up front if you include Danny Griffiths who are all fighting for two slots at the moment and they all look really good so it will give me headaches come the Tranmere game.
"We like to have energy in the team and we certainly have that. We want a goalkeeper in before Tranmere and we'll maybe look to bring one more in from there."
One player who won't be signing for the Saddlers is midfielder Shabir Isoufi.
The Afghanistan born former Holland under-19 international had a brief trial at the Banks's last week and featured in games against Nottingham Forest and Chasetown but Smith has ruled out offering the 21-year-old a deal.
"Shabir is not staying, I have spoken with him and his agent," said Smith.
"He has some really good touches and skill but he is not going to better the squad at the moment."
