Dean Smith waiting on answers from Walsall duo

Walsall boss Dean Smith expects to know this week whether striker Will Grigg will stay at the club – though Febian Brandy's future could take longer to resolve.

The forward duo's contracts expire at the end of the month and both are yet to agree new terms despite extensive negotiations with the Saddlers.

Manager Smith acknowledges time is running out for them to sign but expects 20-goal Grigg's future to be decided "either way" when the player returns from holiday later this week.

But Smith believes an uncertain Brandy will take longer to make up his mind and admits he may be forced to start looking at other available options, should the 24-year-old continue to stall.

Smith said: "The situation currently is that Will Grigg is on holiday, he gets back later this week and then we will have a decision.

"Hopefully, that will result in him signing a new contract and staying but one way or the other his situation will be sorted.

"With Febian things are a little different and talks with him are ongoing. I think he is in a very indecisive place at the moment.

"I know he has spoken to several agents and I have had a meeting with him and explained my position.

"But, obviously, there comes a time when I have to know what he is going to do.

"We are due back training on June 24 and if he is not going to stay or can't come to a decision, we may have to move on."

Under the Bosman ruling, Walsall would be entitled to a fee for 21-year-old Grigg should he choose to go but Brandy could leave for free.

Dean Holden, James Chambers and Adam Chambers have signed new deals. Smith revealed he will also be sitting down with out-of-contract defender Ben Purkiss today.

The 29-year-old was offered a new deal at the end of the season. The only other remaining contract hold-out is striker Craig Westcarr.
