Dean Smith: Will Grigg wants to stay at Walsall
Walsall manager Dean Smith today insisted Will Grigg still wants to stay at the club despite contract talks dragging on.
The striker became the first Saddlers player to hit 20 goals in a season since Jorge Leitao 12 years ago in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe.
He has been in talks with the club over a new deal for almost two months but Smith remains confident of securing the 21-year-old.
Smith admitted: "He said he'd like to stay but everything has to be right. It's in the hands of the chief executive and Will's representatives.
"I have said to Will what I want to say and I want him to sign. Will has intimated to me he wants to sign so if they can get it sorted out then hopefully it will be done."
Grigg, who has remained silent on his future since Smith revealed they were in talks at the end of February, has reportedly been watched by Norwich and Southampton.
The Northern Ireland international refused to be drawn on his contractual situation on Saturday but admitted hitting the 20 goal mark with his second-half opener was a proud moment.
He said: "It's mixed emotions because we wanted the three points and it's disappointing to go 1-0 up and end up drawing.
"I have surpassed my targets. It's a proud moment and I shared it with the fans which was nice. Thanks to the gaffer and thanks to the lads as well.
"The goal tally isn't bad, we've all come through the system so it's a credit to the gaffer and the club so we can go onwards and upwards."
Saturday's point left the Saddlers seventh in League One, a point behind the play-offs with two games left after sixth placed Swindon lost 2-0 at Sheffield United.
But the Robins could extend the gap to four points if they beat Crewe, while Milton Keynes Dons could leapfrog the Saddlers with a win at Colchester tomorrow.
Smith added: "It's another point to the total with two games to go. We're in the mix, that's the positive spin on it and we need to stay there.
"We can't influence other results or what's going on, so we just have to concentrate on what we're doing."
