Kidderminster Harriers confirm Steve Burr was sacked

Chairman Mark Serrell tonight confirmed Steve Burr was sacked by Kidderminster Harriers – describing it as the "right decision at the right time" for the club.

Harriers stunned the non-league football community this morning when they revealed Burr had left his post at Aggborough with immediate effect.

And Serrell has now confirmed his departure was the decision of the club's directors, claiming they made what they believe to be the "right decision at the right time" for the club.

"It's fair to say the board of directors have been considering a lot of things over the last few weeks, he said.

"It was felt in the best interests of the club - in terms of achieving our aim of promotion to the Football League this season - to carry on without Steve.

"It was the board's decision."

The timing of Burr's departure, just short of his fourth anniversary in charge, has left many surprised coming as it did after the club had held League One Peterborough United to a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

A run of four defeats in five games had seen the Harriers fall to seventh in the Skrill Conference but they remained in contention for the play-off positions.

Serrell refused to comment on rumours of a falling out with Burr, who was granted permission to talk to Forest Green Rovers in November, before opting to remain at Aggborough.

"I have no comment to make on rumours because they are just rumours," said Serrell.

"I'm dealing with the facts in this case and I believe we have been open and transparent about where we are.

"It's a very emotive and difficult decision and it is not one which has been taken lightly.

"We felt it was in the right decision at the right time for Kidderminster Harriers.

"We acknowledge Steve has done a tremendous job in often trying circumstances.

"Our aim is to get Kidderminster Harriers into the Football League and we felt this gives us our best opportunity of achieving that goal."

Burr has already been installed as odds-on favourite to take over at League Two strugglers Northampton Town, while Nuneaton Town boss Kevin Wilkin has emerged as an early frontrunner for the Aggborough post.

Harriers are yet to make a statement regarding Burr's assistant Gary Whild, who was set to meet with Serrell this afternoon.
