Relieved Aston Villa boss Remi Garde believes his side deserved a slice of luck as they picked up the first victory of his reign.

A Joleon Lescott header in the second-half, aided by a howler from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, gave Villa a 1-0 win last night.

Garde's side may still be rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, but the result will give hope of an unlikely survival act.

And the Villa chief was happy to see the home faithful getting behind the team, after recent videos of players receiving abuse from supporters.

He said: "We suffered so much in the previous weeks and now we are very happy. Definitely the players showed pride and we deserved to win. We won only 1-0, but we created many good opportunities.

"We earned our luck by being very aggressive on the ball. We didn't sit back after we scored, we tried to score a second. We had a very good attitude.

"It was a nice feeling to feel the crowd behind the players, it's very important. We cannot be happy too long – we have to build on this one."

Lescott vowed the players would not be getting carried away after their first win since the opening day of the season – a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth.

He said: "It's massive. It's been a difficult time for us. It's not about performance, it's about points and we're delighted to get the three.

"Crystal Palace are a good away team, but we nullified them. As a defender you pride yourself on clean sheets and we earned that.

"We're not going to get carried away but we can take pride from that performance."

Palace boss Alan Pardew admitted it was one of his side's poorest displays of the season.

He said: "A lot of things went wrong. We lacked energy, we lacked quality. Villa really deserved their victory – they worked so, so hard."
