The 49-year-old is in 'advanced talks' with Villa to replace Tim Sherwood, according to sources in France, and is now odds-on favourite with many bookmakers.

Garde, who played for Arsenal between 1996 and 1999, is currently on a sabbatical from the game having left Lyon in 2014, after three seasons in charge.

Former Everton and Manchester United boss David Moyes, Nigel Pearson and Brendan Rodgers are among the other names to have been linked with the vacant Villa Park hotseat after Sherwood was dismissed earlier today after eight months at the helm.

Villa are currently bottom of the Premier League, having lost eight of their opening ten Premier League games.
