WATCH: Hero Jimmy Anderson swings by for Brewood anniversary
Brewood Cricket Club signed off their 150th anniversary celebrations in style – with a visit from England star Jimmy Anderson.
Players were bowled over as Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker in Tests, put them through their paces in a special coaching session at Wolverhampton Sports Arena.
He then returned to the Deansfield Road club for a question and answer session, before members were able to mingle and take have their taken photograph taken with one of the country's finest-ever players. Anderson's visit came after Brewood won a competition organised by Marston's Brewery and it marked a fitting finale to a year of celebrations, which also included a match against the MCC.
"It has been a very big year at the club and this is really the icing on the cake," explained club manager Andy Gubby. "I don't think we have have ever had an England player visit the club before, let alone one of the best. I couldn't believe it when I heard he was coming."
Brewood, founded in 1865, currently field five teams with their first XI playing in the Birmingham and District Premier League.
Anderson, who has taken 426 Test wickets, is no stranger to club cricket having cut his teeth in the Lancashire League with Burnley.
"It has been a huge part of my career and a huge part of my childhood," said the 33-year-old, who has just returned from England's Test series against Pakistan.
"The one thing about club cricket, or what I learned from a young age, is the social aspect.
"To see the amount of support the club has got and to be celebrating 150 years is a huge achievement.
"It is not easy for clubs these days to survive and stay afloat, you need the support of the local community and they have that here in abundance."
