Evans played out a titanic battle with the 1997 champion in the first round of qualifying at Ponds Forge in Sheffield before losing 10-8.

The 10-time ladies world champion needed to progress through three qualifying rounds but lost out narrowly at the opening stage to the veteran Irishman.

Evans, aged 29, led twice before Doherty edged 5-4 ahead and retained his advantage.

Evans said: "I'm happy to have stuck in there with a player who has been world champion and has so much experience.

"There's no reason why I can't beat people like Ken if I play a bit better."

"It was such a tough game and she played out of her skin," said Doherty.

"She was there today because she deserves it, she's a good player and she should be given more chances on the tour."
