Wolves' Kenny: Afobe class can fire us to glory
Kenny Jackett believes Benik Afobe is ready to fire Wolves into the Premier League after agreeing a fee for the Arsenal hot-shot.
The 21-year-old has undergone a medical at Molineux after the striker's price – believed to be in the region of £2m – was settled with the Premier League club.
On-loan Afobe has scored 19 goals in 31 appearances in League One for MK Dons this season and Jackett believes now is the ideal time for him to be tested at the higher level.
The England Under-21 star scored twice in MK Dons' sensational 4-0 Capital One Cup win over Manchester United earlier in the season. And Jackett is excited by his potential.
"I watched him come through at Arsenal and watched his progress up to the current time and we feel, at 21, he fits into the bracket we are looking for that can improve us," said Jackett.
"He is on a good run, a very good run and has got over his injury problems.
"He has proved an asset for MK Dons, has a good goalscoring record in League One and he is ready now to step up to try the challenge of Championship football, which many of our players have done this year.
"He has the pace, power and goal-scoring record that we need.
"He will help us in the second half of this season and the years to come."
Afobe enjoyed a brief spell on loan at Millwall near to the end of Jackett's reign at the New Den, though he failed to score in five appearances.
With Bakary Sako currently away with Mali at the African Cup of Nations, the head coach has been on the hunt for more firepower to ease the burden on Nouha Dicko. He believes Afobe can provide it
"I think we have been very reliant on Nouha Dicko as a club," added Jackett. "The system, the way we play and his success rate when he plays.
"We are looking for a player who can link with him or be able to dovetail.
"Options at the front of the side, with pace and power, are something we have been looking for."
Dave Edwards scored the only goal as Wolves won 1-0 at Blackburn yesterday to move within a point of the top six.
