Taylor's Saddlers are full of belief

Defender Andy Taylor says Walsall have never been concerned about a relegation battle and insists: "It's time to start looking up, not down."

Just over a month ago the Saddlers were second-bottom of League One but three wins and two draws in an unbeaten five-match league run has propelled them up to 13th.

They are still only four points off the drop zone in a congested bottom half but, after taking another point at Coventry on Saturday, Taylor is looking upward.

The left-back said: "As a squad, we weren't worried, which is the main thing. We were always confident.

"At that stage, we didn't have the points on the board that the performances deserved but we knew eventually they would start coming.

"At the time we had quite a few lads out injured and obviously a lot of them are back fit now – and Bradders (top scorer Tom Bradshaw) coming back soon will give us a boost as well.

"So it's looking good at the minute and this league is about consistency.

"If you can put a consistent run of results together, as we have done recently, and stay unbeaten for a decent period of time, you will climb the table, it's inevitable."

The stalemate at Coventry saw the Saddlers record an impressive ninth league clean sheet of the season and cement the Walsall defence's status as the meanest in the division.

Taylor said: "I think the more you can have a consistent back five – and obviously there have been a few ins and outs this season – it is advantageous because you build up relationships and an understanding. We pride ourselves on our organisation and team shape starting from the front so the plaudits are brilliant but we take them as a team, not just as a back four or five."
