Wolves boss Jackett has his eye on Huddersfield winger Danny Ward
Wolves are rivalling former boss Mick McCarthy in again monitoring Huddersfield winger Danny Ward, it emerged today.
Head coach Kenny Jackett and his Ipswich counterpart are weighing up a move for the out-of-contract 22-year-old, a year since Wolves were first linked with the player.
The Terriers are set to offer the Bradford-born wideman a new deal, and Ward is said to be happy at the John Smith's Stadium.
But with Wolves expecting interest from the Premier League in Bakary Sako, Jackett is doing all the necessary groundwork in case the Mali left-sided player leaves and he needs a replacement.
Ward, who is known to Wolves captain Sam Ricketts from his time at Bolton, has just enjoyed his most prolific season, scoring 10 goals in 38 League games – including a hat-trick in the Terriers' 4-1 win at Watford on the last day of the season - and has made over 100 appearances for Huddersfield since his loan move from the Reebok Stadium became permanent in 2011.
Ward made two senior substitute's appearances for the Trotters and had loan spells with Swindon, Coventry and Huddersfield, who he helped to promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in 2011-12.
He moved to the Terriers permanently three years ago for an estimated £1m.
Jackett hinted targets Wolves struggled to sign last summer because of their League One status may become 'live' now.
"It certainly helps us – if you're looking at Wolves with Championship status and hopefully some momentum, it looks a bit different to perhaps how it did to last August, when people were around and we were looking," said the boss.
"You need to do your homework and prepare your lists and to some degree, if you're Kevin Thelwell (head of development), Stuart Webber (head of recruitment) or Chris Badlan (technical recruitment officer), you know exactly where people are, what they want and what the situation is so you've got the knowledge – that's doing your job.
"That's very important because if you don't have that day-to-day, week-to-week knowledge of any business when a good deal comes up, you can't recognise it.
"Early clarification of promotion has definitely been a help and been clear for us."
