Poll: 'It's who you play for not how you play.' Do you agree with Sunderland winger Adam Johnson?

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has warned his fellow England hopefuls they have little chance of playing for their country if they are not at a top-eight club.

Johnson believes the clubs players turn out for, rather than form, is a big factor in selection for the England squad.

He suggests that players at the top five sides have a greater chance of playing for England than those players in a strong run of form at other clubs.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who has 12 senior caps, was tipped to make it into Roy Hodgson's squad for the friendly with Denmark earlier this month after embarking on a blistering run of form for his club.

However, he did not make the squad. 57% of the squad play for one of the top five sides (Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool). The rest of the squad was formed of players outside the top five, from Scotland and Canada.

83% of the England squad from Denmark was made up of players from the top-eight sides.

The full squad for the Denmark friendly was:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Cardiff City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Jay Rodriguez (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United).

What do you think? Is Johnson right?
