It was 0-0 when Atletico won a free-kick just inside Barcelona's half. The ball was slipped through to Diego who unleased a sensational strike into the opposition goal.
Neymar equalised for Barcelona but Diego scored an important away goal during their Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie.
Atletico are in a three-way race for the La Liga title with Barcelona and Real Madrid. All three sides have played the same number of games but it is Diego's side that hold top spot, one point clear of second placed Barcelona.
Atletico are challenging for their first La Liga title since winning the competition in 1995/96.
