PICTURED: Lucky escape for pair as 70ft tree falls onto car
A 70ft tree toppled on to a car in today's high winds - closing a major road and causing long tailbacks.
The tree fell across the A449 at Wombourne at around 1.15pm, smashing into the bonnet of a red Audi.
Remarkable nobody was seriously hurt in the incident caused by strong winds as Storm Jake swept across the region.
Two people were checked over by paramedics at the roadside but were not taken to hospital.
The road remains closed between Beggars Bush Lane and Battlefield Hill causing misery for drivers in both directions.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police, said: "We received a call just after 1.15pm to a tree which had fallen onto a vehicle, a red Audi, in Stourbridge Road.
"There were no injuries reported.
"The tree was across the road completely blocking it."
Ambulance and fire crew were both called following the tree's collapse.
Drivers are being advised to avoid the area while tree surgeons work to clear the road.
Fiona Carding, spokeswoman for Staffordshire Fire Service, said a crew from Wombourne had attended and made the car safe.
She added one of the pair treated at the scene by paramedics was a woman - but neither were taken to hospital.
