The separate collisions forced the northbound carriageway between junctions 3 for Halesowen and 2 for Oldbury to be closed briefly this evening causing traffic delays.

The first incident occurred around 7.10pm when a car hit the central reservation.

The female passenger was unhurt in the crash.

One lane was initially closed until around ten minutes later when a black Vauxhall Astra and a white Audi saloon crashed in the second incident, prompting the entire carriageway to be shut off.

The Astra rolled over and came to rest precariously on two wheels against the Audi.

Both vehicles were severely dented while the Astra sustained a crumpled roof, windscreen and bonnet.

Fire crews called to the scene said it was 'miraculous' both of the male drivers avoided serious injury.

A crew from Haden Cross and another from Bournbrook attended to make the area safe while another from Oldbury was put on standby.

Watch Commander Temple Jones from Haden Cross fire station said: "There was an accident where the highways agency closed off the inside lane but the other two lanes were still running.

"There wasn't anyone hurt and they had got out prior to our arrival but the cars sustained a lot of damage."

He added: "When we arrived the black car was resting like that on the Audi but I believe it had rolled over."

Fire crews stayed at the scene for around half an hour assisting Highways England officers who managed to reopen the whole carriageway about 8.30pm after all vehicles had been moved on to the hard shoulder.

The incidents prompted safety warnings from fire crews.

@Bournbrookfire Tweeted a picture of the wreckage with the message: "RTC M5 junction 3-2. Please slow down the roads are very dangerous tonight. Miraculously No injuries."
