Birmingham New Street rail chaos as trains cancelled

Commuters faced rush hour rail chaos today as engineering works over-ran, forcing large numbers of cancellations of trains in and out of Birmingham New Street.

The work on the line between Wolverhampton and Birmingham in Coseley was supposed to be completed in time for rush hour.

But rail bosses said the line was expected to be blocked until about 8.30am.

Virgin Trains added: "Due to over running engineering works between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New St some lines are blocked. Disruption expected until 08.30."

Signalling problems at Birmingham New Street were also causing delays on services to London Euston.
