One lane of the M54 was intially shut after the car fire on the eastbound carriageway between junction two for Wolverhampton and junction three for Albrighton at about 6.50pm.
However emergency services later had to close the whole carriageway.
The closure led to 60-minute delays and three miles of tailbacks for drivers.
Lane closures were lifted shortly after 9pm, the Highways Agency said. It is believed the car involved had broken down before flames broke out.
