Fury over Jeremy Corbyn crowd's sick jokes in newspaper set up by supporters

A newspaper set up by Jeremy Corbyn supporters has provoked outrage after printing sick jokes about the Nice terror attack and a British soldier who died on a training exercise.

Published

A spoof horoscope under the name of 'Emmanuel Goldfish' in The Word newspaper joked about the attack by IS fanatic Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel in France.

The full text under the Taurus zodiac sign reads: "Shopping tip: This week we are touchy about big vehicles that plough through pedestrians. Get a cycle or motorbike. Watch out for mad motorists. Your lucky mineral is polystyrene."

The Leo star sign was also a clear reference to the death of Corporal Josh Hoole who collapsed and died during a training run in the Brecon Beacons on the hottest day of the year last month.

It reads: "If you're a soldier planning a trip to the Middle East/Brecon Beacons, a thermos of iced tea may save your life from climate change. Your unlucky mineral is oil."

The £1 newspaper says it is 'crowd funded', meaning that it relies on donations from supporters to be produced and printed.

Its website also includes the addresses, and in some cases the names, of distributors including several in Wolverhampton, Dudley, Bridgnorth, Birmingham, Walsall and Staffordshire.

In some cases, it lists individuals who are distributing the publication from home.

The article has been condemned by Labour MPs in the Black Country who branded it as 'cruel'. West Bromwich East MP and Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson said it was 'poor taste'.

Dudley North MP Ian Austin said: "The thousands of decent Labour Party members and supporters who backed Jeremy will be appalled to see his cheerleaders cracking sick jokes about a soldier dying and holiday-makers being slaughtered by terrorists."

Wolverhampton South East MP Pat McFadden said: "There is too much cruelty about at the moment."

The fortnightly newspaper, which describes itself as 'Britain's only socialist tabloid' carries the strapline 'equality, democracy, truth, and courage'.

It claims to be 'independent' of any political party but describes Jeremy Corbyn as 'the people's champion'.

Its editor, who uses the pseudonym Peter Loo, says the newspaper is a 'platform to help Jeremy' and to 'defend him'.

When approached about the horoscope, the newspaper merely sent a reply making derogatory comments about royalty and added: "We look forward to reading the article on us."
