Eric Robinson has been appointed as the new chief executive of Wirral Council. He joined Staffordshire in 2005 and is the current deputy chief and director for people.

The date he will take up the role has not yet been decided. Mr Robinson, a former social worker, was director of social services at Cambridge and Enfield.

He is working with the Department for Education and the Cabinet Office to develop new ways of delivering children's services. Wirral Council leader Phil Davies said: "With a strong record in transforming, improving and commissioning services, Eric is the ideal appointment to take us forward."

Council leader Philip Atkins told a meeting of the full council it would be the county council's loss and Wirral's gain.
