The Red Admiral, in Gorse Farm Road, shut suddenly before being sold last month.

Councillor Joyce Underhill, who represents the Newton ward, said rumours were circulating that it could be turned into a day nursery.

The Sandwell Council member said: "It has been sold but as of yet no change of use has been put into planning for it.

"However, there has been two enquiries about it being turned into a day centre or been kept as a pub but selling Caribbean food.

"There had been a decline in people going in towards the end but a few years ago it used to be really popular."

Councillor Underhill continued: "It is sad that a lot of pubs are closing in the area so it would be nice to see it brought back into use.

"However, if it was to be used as a nursery it would still fulfil a need in the community."

The pub was previously owned by Ember Inns and it confirmed that the building had been sold.
