The 59-year-old, capped by England 84 times, was arrested by police officers close to Heathrow Airport on Friday, July 1.

He will appear before magistrates later this month.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police, said: "Ray Wilkins - 59 of The Laurels, Cobham - was charged on 2 July with drink driving.

"He has been bailed to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on 18 July.

"This follows an incident at approximately 20.10hrs on Friday, 1 July, when officers from the Met's Aviation Policing Command arrested a man on suspicion of drink drive on the Northern Perimeter Road close to Heathrow Airport.

"He was taken to a west London police station and charged as above."

The ex-England and Chelsea footballer was reportedly driving his Mercedes SL400 when he was pulled over around 8pm.

Wilkins was sacked by Aston Villa at the same time as Tim Sherwood following eight defeats in their opening ten Premier League games of last season.

First-team coach Mark Robson and performance analyst Seamus Brady also left with immediate effect.
