Revealed: Wolverhampton dog owners to pay more to collect strays

Dog owners will have to pay more if their pets are collected by Wolverhampton council's dog warden under plans which will raise £10,000.

Currently, Wolverhampton council does not charge owners when their stray dogs are returned directly to their homes. A £25 charge is imposed when a dog has to be sent to the kennels and then collected.

However, this is not enough to cover costs and it is now proposed to introduce and increase charges for both situations.

A report which is now out for consultation as part of Wolverhampton council's draft budget states: "Increased charges will have the added impact of deterring future strays which will also reduce costs.

"It is envisaged that the total benefit arising from increased charges and reduced costs will be £10,000."

It is estimated that around 300 dog owners will be affected by the change.

City finance boss, Councillor Andrew Johnson, said: "This is for public consultation.

"It seems fair that if we have got a dog and it regrettably strays and we have to put it up and pay for kennelling that it is reimbursed."
