Brian Kandare, aged 33 and wife Precious, 37, allegedly killed their daughter Rebecca by failing to provide access to food or medical care.

A post mortem revealed the child suffered with rickets and died on January 6 last year from pneumonia as a result of severe malnourishment.

Her parents, of South Avenue, Wednesfield, were both charged with murder when they were brought before the courts in September last year.

But a hearing at the Old Bailey on Monday was presented with a new indictment, with one charge of child cruelty and two counts of manslaughter.

Baby Rebecca was rushed to New Cross Hospital when the alarm was raised about her condition but doctors could not save her.

Brian Kandare, also known as Ngonidzashe, appeared at the old Bailey via videolink from Birmingham Prison, while his wife was on the videolink from Foston Hall Prison in Derby. They spoke only to confirm their names.

Mr Justice Edis remanded both defendants in custody until the start of their trial on November 6 at Nottingham Crown Court.

At a previous hearing they both pleaded not guilty to the now discontinued charges of murder, manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child.
