Outrage after 20 tyres dumped at Willenhall beauty spot
More than 20 lorry and car tyres have been dumped at a beauty spot - sparking outrage from locals.
Members of The Friends of Fibbersley Nature Reserve, which look after the site at Noose Lane in Willenhall voluntarily, were dismayed when they discovered the discarded tyres a few weeks ago.
But the group were even more alarmed when they were told Walsall Council, which is responsible for the land, would not be able to collect them until October.
However, following fierce criticism the authority has now responded and confirmed they will remove the tyres this week.
Willenhall South ward members Councillor Sean and Diane Coughlin initially raised the issue with the council after meeting with the friends group.
Councillor Sean Coughlin said: "We are really really pleased they are going to be removed now, not just for the fact we have been able to get involved and do something but really pleased for the friends of the reserve who work hard all year round.
"They were very disappointed to hear that it wasn't going to be done for months initially so this is win win all round.
"One of the positive things now is that fencing is going to be put up to stop this happening again."
Councillor Louise Harrison, portfolio holder for Clean and Green added:: "I find it appalling that someone has dumped a load of tyres into the water.
"The area is a beautiful, green oasis where nature has a chance to thrive and visitors can escape the urban landscape.
"There are legitimate ways to dispose this type of waste but this isn't one of them.
"We're now having to prioritise our resources to remove the tyres from the water.
"I've tasked our Clean and Green teams to get this done as quickly as possible.
"Fly tipping is a scourge on our society and sadly, continues to be a serious issue in the borough.
"We encourage anyone who is a witness to this crime to please report it to the Council's Clean and Green service."
Anyone witnessing someone dumping waste can report it by emailing cleanandgreen@walsall.gov.uk or call 01922 653344 or the Council's Environmental Health on 01922 653020.
