The man had been swimming lengths at Central Baths in Wolverhampton when lifeguards noticed he was underneath the water and motionless.

Council spokesman Tim Clark said: "They immediately jumped into the pool and performed full CPR and defibrillation at poolside.

"The ambulance was also called and they took over once they arrived."

They believe the man is a regular customer at the WV Active facility, which was busy at the time of the incident and was evacuated and closed for the rest of the night.

Mr Clark added: "On behalf of WV Active and the council we wish him a full and speedy recovery and we would like to praise the actions of our lifeguards who may well have contributed to saving his life."

West Midlands Ambulance Service say they were called to Central Baths on July 16 at 6.17pm. Two ambulance crews and a paramedic officer attended and continued with resuscitation attempts as they took the man to New Cross Hospital.
