Controversial plans to build homes on the site of a former Victorian school have been submitted.

Codsall Developments Limited is looking to redevelop two fifths of the land at School Road, Tettenhall, near to where the old Tettenhall Wood Special School stands.

The firm is looking to build six homes on the site.

The plans do not affect the school itself, but a further application relating to the Victorian school building will be made in the future, according to the application.

A consultation leaflet by company Pegasus Group, which has submitted the application on behalf of Codsall Developments Limited, shared details of plans to build 10 homes and a food store at the site with members of the community.

Opposition to the plans have already been shared by residents, with an online petition to stop the demolition of the school building attracting almost 200 signatures.

The Tettenhall neighbourhood plan, which acts as a link between residents and the council, also specifically states that the Victorian school building should retain its frontage.

The application for the six homes states: "The Victorian buildings on the frontage of the site remain vacant and their future is uncertain due to viability issues associated with their structure and the presence of asbestos."

Cyril Randles, who is chairman of the steering group behind the neighbourhood plan, said: "We are very concerned about what will happen to the frontage of the school building and we will have to review this application to ensure that it doesn't affect the front.

"It is important that it stays so we can keep the village feel and environment here in Tettenhall.

"The developers are clearly looking to get rid of the Victorian building at some point and that is what we are worried about.

"We aren't against developments in this area but we want to preserve buildings which we believe are an important part of our town's history.

"If it was the case that these six homes would constitute the whole plan and we had confidence that the developers would leave the building alone, it would be a different matter."

The six homes will be arranged as three semi detached three bedroom houses and will be aimed at first time buyers or young families.

Mr Randles and the neighbourhood plan steering group have previously claimed the consultation leaflet contained misleading information and attempts to associate itself with the group.

Tettenhall Wood Special School closed in 2010 and relocated to Regis Road.
