The smallest big fight around: Wolverhampton artist pays tribute to boxing bout

The smallest things can have the biggest impacts. That's how world renowned artist Willard Wigan describes his latest work that pay tribute to the 'biggest fight of the century.'

The 57-year-old has unveiled tiny figurines of Floyd 'Money' Mayweather and Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao, who went toe to toe on May 2 in the most expensive boxing bout of all time.

Despite the match not living to the hype of the 'fight of the century' that many so wanted, Willard is hoping the piece can still pack a punch.

"Mayweather is undefeated in 48 fights and has never been knocked out before but when he sees the sculpture it will knock him out," said boxing fan Willard.

The micro sculptures took seven painstaking weeks to craft and are incredibly smaller than the size of this sentence's full stop.

He added: "If readers were to take the smallest needle out the pack, the two sculptures would fit in the eye."

Willard tried to exhibit his work at the MGM during the week of the fight but venue preparations meant he was unable to.

Plans are in place however to get the work over to both boxers.

He said: "I knew Mayweather would win it. He's like roadrunner, Coyote tries to get him but he can't, he's too slick. Any boxer who wants to learn technique and defence can learn from Mayweather. There's no one better than him, he's too good."

"The fight was hyped up to be biggest in the world but it didn't live up to expectations. It wasn't Floyd's fault, he just boxed how he normally does."

The tiny versions of the two stars will be showcased when Willard opens his permanent exhibition in Birmingham in July, along with his 'unseen work.'

Speaking on his work, Willard said even he can't comprehend how small they are.

"My work appears to defy the laws of physics" he said. "Somehow I've found a way of overcoming that.

"God gave me a gift of working on a molecular level. I don't even know how I can work that small."
