But a dodgy BT sign diverting people away from the busy main road while emergency work is carried out is causing a stir.

It incorrectly states that Penne Road is closed, perhaps suggesting that people like Penn councillor Paul Singh might be missing out on some penne pasta while diversions are in place.

BT spokesman Ian Read said: "We'll dish out another sign as soon as possible, hopefully written and penned correctly next time."

The work is due to finish at the end of the week.

The carriageway is being dug up in a bid to find a fault that has led to hundreds of businesses and households being cut off from phone lines.
