Deer rescued after getting stuck in railings at Wolverhampton school
A roe deer had to be rescued after getting stuck in a metal fence surrounding a Black Country school.
A walker found the animal in the precarious position with her bum stuck in the railings at Smestow School, in Wolverhampton, and alerted the RSPCA.
Animal rescuers Cara Gibbon and Claire Davey were sent to the scene – and with the help of the school caretaker they went to work to try to free the animal who was half in and half out of the fence, but otherwise appeared uninjured.
They put a blanket over the deer's head to stop her getting stressed, while they tried to bend the bars out using a car jack – but this didn't work. So they then used a saw on one of the railings to create some space – and while Claire removed the cover from the deer's head, Cara gently pushed the deer forward to make her escape following the incident on February 9.
Cara said: “She was a beautiful roe deer and it was a lovely feeling after releasing her to watch her happily run free.
“We believe she had been running in the area at night and thought she could get through the railings in the gates but misjudged the gap and her bum was unable to get through.
“As she tried to go forward she was unable to move as the metal had trapped her between her hips and her waist. Luckily she was spotted and we were called to help.
“We tend to be called to help quite a lot of deer trapped in this way – hopefully she will learn from this encounter.”
