The demolition has begun this week

The Tackeroo was the go-to place in Hednesford for more than half a century until 2014 when the owner announced he wanted to retire.

Now it has been levelled after planning permission was passed to build housing on the site.

The club was established in 1950 but its future was cast into doubt when former owner Geoff Summerfield, who took it on in 1997, announced in 2014 that he wanted to retire.

The venue opened on Fridays and Saturdays providing a stage for a host of tribute bands and a space to host many charity nights.

Councillor Doris Grice, who represents the Hednesford North Ward, said that while the site did bring 'some great shows' to the area, she would often get complaints from residents while it was active in relation to noise.

She said: "People liked the venue definitely, there were some good acts over the years and it was well used.

"However, I think when it was closed down that news was definitely welcomed by those who lived nearby.

"It was just a little bit too close to residential homes for some.

"It is sad to lose a part of our history here but it is better that the site is turned into something useful than just left."

My Coo-Ca-Choo singer Alvin Stardust graced the stage of the Tackeroo in 2012.

The Tackeroo was put on the market for £290,000 although the property website Rightmove last had it listed for £115,000.

Councillor George Adamson, leader of Cannock Chase District Council and representative of Hednesford Grean Heath ward, said it was 'a shame' to see the site go.

He said: "Obviously it is a shame to lose a venue with history like the Tackeroo but it has been derelict for a number of years now.

"It is better that we get some nice apartments built on the site than let it fall into disrepair."
