Nick Harper, a father-of-four from Brierley Hill, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma before the first lockdown last year.

The 42-year-old, who is working on the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick, was given the all-clear from cancer in March.

And now he has won his dream car – a Mercedes AMG CLA35 – and £50,000 in cash thanks to Best Of The Best (BOTB).

Nick, who paid £1 for his ticket, said: “It’s been a really tough year. With my diagnosis and then the pandemic, I didn’t know where to turn.

"My friend and I were diagnosed within a week of each other and we always said as soon as we get the all clear we’ll take a holiday to Cyprus and that’s exactly what I’m going to spend the money on.

“It’s a beautiful car and exactly what I need. It’s luxurious looking and sporty.”

Nick is father to two sons Reece, 25, and Liam, 18, and two daughters, Hannah, 20, and Heather, 19. He said whatever money is left after his holiday will go towards them.

BOTB presenter Christian Williams turned up and informed him that he was a Dream Car Competition winner.

Christian said: “What a year Nick has had – this seems like the light at the end of a dark tunnel for him and I’m so glad BOTB was able to put a smile on his face.”

The Mercedes can reach a top speed of 155mph thanks to its i4 Turbo 400 torque engine, which Nick joked is a “definite upgrade” from his Toyota.

And Nick’s team at Sandwell Aquatics Centre, which is being built in Smethwick, were really pleased for their colleague.

The winner added: “It’s a great team here. They were all chuffed for me when Christian turned up. This is so overwhelming. I’ve been playing BOTB for a couple of years now and I’ve always dreamt of this moment but I just can’t describe the feeling.”

Sandwell Aquatics Centre will play host to the diving and swimming events for next year’s Commonwealth Games.

BOTB, a dream car and lifestyle competition company, offers people the chance to win two cars each week.
